Mixi helps you find social groups made up of like-minded individuals.

Mixi is a social network based in Japan, and its user base extends throughout the world. The mission of this social network is to give enthusiasts access to people who share their interests. If you enjoy model trains or overclocking computers, you can find others who like those activities too. These hobbies aren’t limited to traditional activities either. You can, for instance, join communities who are fans of a particular actor or ship a certain couple in their favorite television show.

If Mixi doesn’t have a community just for you, that’s all right too. You can create a community. Either keep it private and relatively small or open it up to anyone who’s interested. There are a lot of ways you can interact with people in your social groups. There’s a forums system where you can post images and talk publicly with the group. You can also friend individual users and send and receive private messages. There’s even a journal or diary component that can remain completely private to you.

Mixi even allows you to schedule events that help ensure a large portion of the community is able to gather and socialize at a particular time. One community for baseball fans, for instance, holds viewing parties during the MLB playoffs, and that provided a fun way for baseball fans from around the world to come together and celebrate their shared interest. Mixi is at its core a social network. As with any social network, it is what you make of it and you have to be on guard for users who aren’t participating in good faith. These people are trolls at best and predators at worst.

If Mixi sounds like the kind of social network you’ve been looking for, then you’re sure to have a great time with it. This app is your gateway to the service. There’s also a website, but it only presents in Japanese by default. The app is easily used in English and other languages. The only problem with the app for Windows is that it lags behind the Android version. The Android app is clearly the focus, and new features are often active on the service a long time before making their way into this version.
